A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Each letter and number in order, and whether it blinks. Photograph it before anything else, since opening the door or canceling the cycle can wipe some codes.
Look on the sticker around the door opening, under the lid or on the back of the cabinet. The same code can mean a drain issue on one make and a lock issue on another.
That answer decides whether you shut the valves and cut the power right now, or just book the next free slot.
Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.
How to read a codeSomething the washer does by design, or a setting somebody turned on — a child lock, a prompt to run a cleaning cycle, a paused cycle waiting for the door. No part has failed and nothing needs replacing.
The washer tried to empty the tub and the water level did not drop in time. A sock or a coin in the pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a blocked standpipe is ruled out before the pump itself.
Water arrived too slowly, not at all, or kept coming after it should have stopped. The supply valves on the wall and the screens inside the fill hoses are checked before the inlet valve or the level sensor.
The control sensed the drum wobbling and cut the spin short. Usually it is one heavy item bunched to one side or a machine that is not level; worn shocks or springs come next, and shipping bolts left in a new washer are checked too.
The control cannot confirm that the door or lid is locked, or cannot release it. A latch that does not reach the lock, a bent strike or water still in the tub is looked at before the lock assembly.
The control told the drum to turn and it did not turn as expected — a slipped or broken belt, a worn coupler, or a motor or its speed sensor reading out of range. The belt and the connections are checked before the motor.
A water level sensor, a temperature sensor or the wiring to one of them is reporting a value outside its range. The reading and the small air hose to the level sensor are checked with a meter before any part is ordered.
The main control board and the panel board have lost contact with each other. The wire harness and its plugs are checked, and any sign of water reaching them, before either board is replaced.
