What F9 E1
actually means.
The control times every pump-out, and F9 E1 appears when the tub has not emptied in time. On a Whirlpool the cause is usually in the drain path rather than the pump itself: a hose pushed too deep into the standpipe, a kink, a clogged house drain or, on front-load models that have one, a packed pump filter.

Look at where the drain hose enters the standpipe: no more than about 4.5 inches of hose should be inside it, and it should not be taped in place.
Straighten any kink behind the washer and make sure the standpipe or laundry tub is not backing up.
On a front-load model with a filter behind the lower drawer, drain and clean the pump filter, then run Drain & Spin; if F9 E1 returns, book a visit.
What not to do
F9 E1 is not a leak alarm. A washer that drains slowly or siphons water back into the tub keeps the water inside; water on the floor is a separate problem that starts with shutting the supply valves.
