Kenmore sold both front-load and top-load washers under several prefixes; the 796 front-loaders and 110 VMW top-loaders covered here use different code styles. Reading the prefix first saves a wrong guess about what a code means.
The prefix picks the code chart
Sears kept separate code charts by model prefix: one for front-loaders starting with 796, another for 110 VMW top-loaders, and more for other families. The same letters can mean different things on two Kenmores, so the full model number matters.
No display means a hidden code
On 110 VMW top-loaders without a digital display, a flashing Lid Lock light only says that a code was stored. A diagnostic test mode is needed to read which one, which is part of a visit.
Fill has two deadlines
A 796 front-loader shows IE if the first water level is not reached within 8 minutes or the final level within 25 minutes. Slow house pressure can trip the second limit even when the valves are open.
Small loads cannot balance
On the 796 front-loaders, UE often comes from a load that is too small rather than too big. One heavy item alone cannot be balanced, and a towel or two usually settles it.
Parts
Kenmore parts are matched by the full model number rather than by the brand name, because the badge covers washers of different designs. Most common parts for these lines are orderable; some older ones may need to be sourced.
Repair or replace
Drain, fill, lock and sensor repairs on a Kenmore are usually worth doing. On an older machine with a failed motor control or tub bearings, comparing against a new washer is sensible.
