Is reading a guide a substitute for having the washer looked at?
No. The guides explain what a washer is doing and which checks are safe for an owner, so the simple causes get ruled out and the rest can be described clearly. Where a guide reaches live wiring, the tub or the inside of the cabinet, it tells you to stop.
Do the guides apply to my brand of washer?
Most are written for the type of washer rather than a single brand, since front-loaders and top-loaders behave much alike whoever makes them. Where a make works differently the guide says so, and your owner's manual always comes first.
Which guide should I read first?
If something is wrong right now, go to the problem pages, which are sorted by what you notice. The guides are longer and suit a question you have time for: how a washer fills and drains, what to check before a visit, or whether an older machine is worth keeping.
