Speed Queen home washers are top-load agitator models and front-load models, some with a Tub Clean cycle. The front-loader's Er codes and the top-loader's status-light patterns are read differently, so the type decides where to start.
The agitator stays in
Speed Queen says the top-load agitator should not be removed except for service. The tub is designed to clean itself, so an owner has no reason to pull the agitator out.
The motor protects itself
A top-loader's internal motor overload protector stops the motor if the tub is overloaded or something has failed, then resets in two or three minutes. If it trips again, Speed Queen says to take the washer out of use.
The front-loader pump has a trap
Front-loaders have a foreign object trap on the pump that collects small items and may need cleaning when draining slows. Several Er codes list a clogged trap among their causes.
Top-loaders signal with lights
On top-load models covered by the guide, status lights flash a set number of times, then pause, to show an error condition. Counting the flashes, or noticing lights that stay on, separates fill, drain, sensor and motor signals.
Parts
Speed Queen washers are built with serviceable mechanical parts, and common parts for current models are generally available. Electronic controls and less common parts may need to be ordered rather than carried on the truck.
Repair or replace
A Speed Queen is designed to be repaired, and drain, fill, lock and motor work is almost always worth doing. Only serious tub or cabinet damage makes replacement worth discussing.
