What the washer motor and belt repair
involves.
The drive turns the drum for washing and spinning. Some washers use a belt from a motor to a pulley on the drum or transmission, others mount the motor right on the back of the tub or under the basket as a direct drive, and some older top-loaders join the motor to the transmission through a plastic coupling. A stretched belt slips and smells hot, a broken coupling leaves the motor spinning alone, and a failed washer motor or motor control leaves the drum still while the washer hums or shows a motor code. The repair tests the drive in order from the control to the drum, so the right part is replaced.

Turn the empty drum by hand and look for a belt that is loose, glazed, cracked or off its pulley.
Run the drive in the service test and listen for a motor that hums, turns without moving the drum, or stops with a code.
