Treat this as an electrical and fire risk. Stop the washer, unplug it or switch off its breaker, and do not restart it to test the smell. If you see smoke or the outlet is scorched, leave the circuit off and call for help.

A washer has no heater on most US models, so a burning smell usually comes from friction or from wiring. A drive belt slipping on a pulley smells of hot rubber, a motor straining against a seized pump or a stiff drum overheats, and a loose terminal can char where power enters the machine. Some front loaders do heat their own water, and a heater that has failed can smell hot too. Any smell like hot plastic or wiring should be treated as an electrical risk before it is treated as a repair.

The smell was only like hot rubber. Is that still urgent?
It is less alarming than an electrical smell but still a reason to stop. A slipping belt or a pump straining against a jam only gets hotter with each load, and the motor pays for it.
Could an overloaded washer cause the smell?
Yes. A tub packed with bedding makes the motor and belt work far harder than normal. If the smell appeared with one oversized load and never returns, that may be all it was, but watch the next few loads.
My new washer smelled hot on the first load. Is that normal?
A faint smell from a new motor can happen once or twice. It should fade quickly. A smell that stays, or that grows, is not a break-in smell.
Is it the outlet or the washer?
A warm or discolored outlet cover, or a plug with dark marks on its prongs, points to the circuit and the cord connection. Leave that circuit off and have both the outlet and the washer looked at.
