What it
usually means.
When clothes come out dirty, the washer is often working but the wash is not reaching them: too much laundry, too little water, the wrong detergent or a cycle too short for the soil. Cold water limits how well detergent dissolves, and residue on dark clothes usually means undissolved soap rather than dirt. When the habits are right and the result is still poor, a washer that does not fill fully, does not agitate or tumble properly, or does not drain between the wash and the rinse is the mechanical case.
