a top-load?

A top-load washer holds its basket upright inside an outer tub hung from suspension rods or springs. Classic models fill the tub and move clothes with a tall agitator driven through a transmission. High-efficiency models use a low impeller or wash plate, fill less, and sense the load before adding water. Either way, a lid switch or lid lock stops the spin while the lid is open, and a belt or a direct-drive motor turns the basket. Top-load washer repair usually means working on the drive, the lid, the suspension or the water valves.

What fails

The problems it shows

The lid switch or lid lock

The control will not spin, and often will not agitate, unless it knows the lid is shut. A broken striker on the lid or a failed switch in the top produces a washer that fills and then just sits.

Suspension rods and springs

Four rods or springs hold the tub level while it spins. As they wear, the tub swings and bangs the cabinet, the washer walks, and the control stops the spin to protect itself.

Transmission, clutch or shift actuator

These parts decide whether the basket agitates or spins. When one slips or sticks, the washer fills and drains but the clothes barely move, or the spin never builds speed.

The belt or the motor coupling

Belt-drive models lose grip as the belt stretches, and some direct-drive models join the motor to the transmission with a plastic coupling that breaks under heavy loads.

Many top-load washers open by lifting the top or tipping the console back, and the cabinet then slides off the front.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. Drive and transmission work is often done from underneath, with the washer tipped back against the wall on a blanket.
  2. The basket may have to come out to reach the tub seal or a gearcase, which means removing the agitator and a large spanner nut.
  3. The tub is drained through the drain hose before the washer is tipped, so nothing spills onto the motor.

Repair or replace

A top-load washer is one of the easiest appliances in the house to repair. Lid switches, suspension rods, belts, couplings and inlet valves are simple parts, and fixing them is almost always worth it. A failed gearcase or transmission on an older machine is where the numbers deserve a closer look.

Is an agitator or an impeller better?
They clean differently rather than better or worse. An agitator moves clothes hard and suits heavy, muddy loads. An impeller uses less water, is gentler on fabric and leaves more room in the basket, but it needs the right load size to turn clothes over properly.
My top-load washer fills but will not spin. What should I check?
First, whether the lid closes firmly and the lock engages. After that, the usual causes are a worn belt, a broken motor coupling, a slipping clutch or a shift actuator that does not change the drive from agitate to spin.
Why does my top-loader bang during the spin?
Usually the load is on one side of the basket, especially with a single blanket or a few towels. If it bangs with a balanced load, the suspension rods or springs have worn and the tub swings too far.
Why does my high-efficiency top-loader use so little water?
That is how it is designed. It weighs the load and adds only what it needs, so the water looks shallow. Clothes that come out dry in patches or still dirty may mean the basket was packed too tight, rather than a failed valve.
Can the agitator be replaced on its own?
Yes, on most models. The agitator comes off after a cap and a bolt at the top of the post. Worn plastic dogs inside a two-piece agitator are a common, inexpensive repair when the top half no longer turns.
