Tower living

A washer in a tower stands above somebody else's ceiling, so a burst hose or a clogged drain is a problem for two households at once. Many buildings require a drain pan, braided supply hoses and shutoff valves within reach of the laundry closet before they will approve the machine at all.

Small homes

In a tight laundry closet the supply hoses behind the washer are often bent hard against the wall when the machine is pushed back, which restricts the fill and stresses the fittings. Leaving a hand's width behind the cabinet and using hoses with angled ends solves most of it.

Older housing stock

Houses built long before automatic washers often got one wherever a drain could be found, and the standpipe, trap and supply valves may be far older than the machine. A washer that drains slowly or gurgles is sometimes reporting on the house's drain rather than on itself.
