Plans for modern Park Slope date to 1847, when Colonel Daniel Richards asked the Brooklyn Common Council to lay out the Eighth Ward's streets.

Richards also proposed turning nearby Gowanus Creek into a canal and draining the marshes in its watershed.

Between 1849 and 1860 Gowanus Creek was deepened under a decree of the state legislature.

Most of the water reaching Park Slope comes from the Catskill and Delaware reservoirs, which New York does not filter, one of only five large U.S. cities to skip that step.
