The SFPUC's Flood Map, updated in December 2024, now gives flood elevations for the parts of San Francisco expected to flood in a 100-year storm.

The map covers only stormwater runoff, not water coming in from San Francisco Bay or the ocean.

Owners whose homes have flooded from the combined sewer or the street during heavy rain can apply for the SFPUC's Floodwater Grant to pay for protection work.

Close to 25,000 catch basins at street corners feed rainwater and runoff into the same pipes that carry household wastewater.

Small homes

Small homes put the washer wherever the plumbing reaches: a hall closet, a stacked pair beside the kitchen or a 24-inch compact under a counter. The drain often goes into a sink or a short standpipe, and a hose pushed too far down can siphon water out of the drum mid-cycle.

On the water

Near salt water, damp air keeps a front-loader's door boot and detergent drawer from ever drying out, and mildew arrives sooner than it would inland. Leaving the door ajar between loads and wiping the boot does more here than any cleaning cycle.
