What DUMBO does

From about 1904 until 1957 the Jay Street Connecting Railroad ran along the waterfront, linking rail yards under the bridges to buildings by the water.

The former Brillo building at 200 Water Street has been under renovation as a condominium building.

The neighborhood has two sections, one between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges and another running east from the Manhattan Bridge toward Vinegar Hill.

Tower living

A washer in a tower stands above somebody else's ceiling, so a burst hose or a clogged drain is a problem for two households at once. Many buildings require a drain pan, braided supply hoses and shutoff valves within reach of the laundry closet before they will approve the machine at all.

Older housing stock

Houses built long before automatic washers often got one wherever a drain could be found, and the standpipe, trap and supply valves may be far older than the machine. A washer that drains slowly or gurgles is sometimes reporting on the house's drain rather than on itself.

Near salt water, damp air keeps a front-loader's door boot and detergent drawer from ever drying out, and mildew arrives sooner than it would inland. Leaving the door ajar between loads and wiping the boot does more here than any cleaning cycle.
