A musty washer is almost always a washer holding moisture and residue somewhere it does not dry out. Front loaders are known for it because the rubber door boot traps water, lint and detergent in its folds, and the airtight door keeps the drum damp between loads. Top loaders collect the same film under the agitator and between the tub and the drum. The film feeds mold and bacteria, and the smell moves into the clothes.
