In the mid-1940s the town of Addicks moved to the western edge of the area after the Army Corps of Engineers built Addicks Reservoir.

During Harvey in 2017, Buffalo Bayou's record level cut off major roads, and a sunken stretch of the Sam Houston Tollway in the area stayed under water for a week.

Controlled releases from the reservoirs, and the flooding they caused, were expected to last up to two weeks after the storm passed.

The Kendall Library took water 4.5 to 5 feet deep in Harvey, the worst damage to any Houston library branch.
