What the washer bearing and tub seal repair

The drum turns on a shaft held by bearings at the back of the tub on a front-loader, or beneath the basket on a top-loader. A rubber seal in front of the bearing keeps wash water out. When the seal wears, water and detergent reach the bearing, which rusts and begins to rumble during the spin, then roar, and finally lets the drum sag. Washer bearing replacement means taking the tub out of the cabinet and pressing out the old bearings and seal. On many front-loaders the tub halves are welded together, so the bearing is sold only with a new outer tub, and that shapes the repair-or-replace answer.
