A washer in a tower stands above somebody else's ceiling, so a burst hose or a clogged drain is a problem for two households at once. Many buildings require a drain pan, braided supply hoses and shutoff valves within reach of the laundry closet before they will approve the machine at all.
Older housing stock
Houses built long before automatic washers often got one wherever a drain could be found, and the standpipe, trap and supply valves may be far older than the machine. A washer that drains slowly or gurgles is sometimes reporting on the house's drain rather than on itself.
Small homes
Getting at the pump of a closet-bound stacked or 24-inch washer can mean unstacking the dryer or walking the washer forward inch by inch. Floor protection and a steady hand on the supply valves come with that territory.
