A front-load washer tumbles clothes through a small pool of water in a drum that turns on its side, lifting them on paddles and dropping them back in. It uses far less water than an older top-loader and spins much faster, often well over a thousand turns a minute. That speed is why the drum rides on a heavy bearing, a spider arm and a set of shock absorbers, and why the door must lock before any water goes in. Most front-load repair calls come down to the pump, the lock, the rubber boot or the parts that carry the spinning drum. What fails on a front-load washer How to tell 01 The door is a round window on the front, and you load clothes from the side rather than dropping them in from above. 02 A thick rubber boot circles the door opening and folds back into the drum when the door is shut. 03 A small hatch low on the front hides a round pump filter cap and a short drain tube. 04 The door clicks and stays locked from the start of a cycle until the drum has come to a full stop. On a front-load washer: a clogged pump filter or a worn drain pump, the door lock, rear drum bearing and seal, the door boot and odor. The problems it shows ### A clogged pump filter or a worn drain pump Coins, hair ties and small socks collect in the filter in front of the pump. Water stays in the drum, the spin never starts, and the display often shows a drain code. ### The door lock The lock has a small motor or wax actuator and a switch that tells the control the door is secure. When either quits, the washer will not start or will not release the door. ### Rear drum bearing and seal A seal at the back of the tub keeps water out of the bearing. Once water gets past it, the bearing rusts and the spin turns into a roar that grows louder over weeks. ### The door boot and odor The fold in the rubber boot holds water, lint and detergent film. It grows a musty smell first, and later a tear that drips at the bottom of the door. ## Getting at it, and whether to. The pump filter and the pump itself are reached from the lower front panel, so a towel and a shallow pan go down before the cap is turned. Bearing and spider arm repairs mean taking the tub out of the cabinet and splitting it, which is a long job done on a protected floor. 3. The water supply valves behind the machine are closed and the plug is pulled before any panel comes off. Repair or replace Pumps, locks, inlet valves, shocks and boots on a front-load washer are routine repairs and almost always worth doing. The question gets harder when the rear bearing has failed: on many models the tub halves are welded, so the bearing comes only with a whole new tub. The pump could not empty the drum. Very often the filter behind the small front hatch is packed with lint or holds a coin or a sock, and cleaning it brings the washer back. If the filter is clear and the pump only hums, the pump itself or the drain hose is the next suspect. ### My front-load washer door will not open after the cycle. Can I force it? No. The door stays locked while water is in the drum or the drum is still turning. Wait a few minutes, then run a drain and spin. If it still stays shut, most models have an emergency release behind the pump hatch, and the lock is tested afterward. ### How do I stop the smell in a front-load washer? Use a detergent marked HE in the amount the label suggests, run a hot cleaning cycle once a month, wipe the fold of the rubber boot, and leave the door and the dispenser drawer open between loads so the inside can dry. ### What is the loud roar during the spin? A rumble that gets louder as the drum speeds up usually means the rear bearing is wearing. Turn the empty drum by hand: a grinding feel or a drum that moves up and down on its shaft confirms it. A coin trapped between the drum and the tub makes a rattle, not a roar. ### Why is my front-load washer leaking from the door? Look at the bottom of the rubber boot for a tear or a sock caught in the fold. Too much detergent can also push suds past the door.
