A compact washer is usually 24 inches wide and fits under a counter, in a closet, or stacked with a matching compact dryer. Most are front-loaders that plug into an ordinary 120-volt outlet, and many heat their own water with a small element. An all-in-one washer-dryer is a compact washer that also dries in the same drum; on this site only its washing side is covered. The smaller drum spins fast, the cabinet is tight, and the drain often lifts water into a sink or a standpipe rather than a floor drain. What fails on a compact washer How to tell 01 The machine is about 24 inches wide, narrower than a standard washer by several inches. 02 It fits under a kitchen or bathroom counter, or in a closet with a compact partner on top. 03 Some have a built-in heater and a wash temperature setting that goes above the hot water from the tap. 04 An all-in-one model has no separate dryer, and its program list includes both washing and drying cycles. On a compact washer: the drain pump and a long lift, the internal water heater, door lock and boot, unbalance in a light cabinet. The problems it shows ### The drain pump and a long lift A compact often pumps water up and over into a sink or a high standpipe. A partly blocked filter or hose that a full-size pump would push through can stop a smaller pump. ### The internal water heater Models that heat their own water carry a small element in the bottom of the tub. When it or its sensor fails, the cycle may stall while waiting for heat or show a temperature code. ### Door lock and boot The lock and the rubber boot are small and do the same work as on a full-size front-loader, and they fail in the same ways: a door that will not lock or release, or a musty drip. ### Unbalance in a light cabinet A compact weighs much less than a full-size washer. An uneven load, a soft floor or worn shocks make it rock, and the control cuts the spin short and leaves clothes wet. ## Getting at it, and whether to. The drain route to the sink or standpipe is traced from end to end, because a high loop or a kink imitates a failed pump. 2. When the compact is stacked, the dryer usually has to come down for work under the washer top. 3. The outlet and its breaker are checked on units that heat their own water, since the heater draws more current than the rest of the machine. Repair or replace Pumps, locks, boots and inlet valves on a compact washer are ordinary repairs and worth doing, especially since a replacement that fits the same counter opening can be hard to find. Many compacts heat their own water and wait for it to reach the chosen temperature, and their wash cycles are longer by design. A cycle that suddenly runs far longer than usual can point at the heater, its sensor, or a slow fill. ### Can a compact washer drain into a kitchen sink? Many are designed to, with the drain hose hooked over the sink edge or connected to a fitting under it. The hose must not be pushed too far down the drain, and the height it has to lift the water must stay within what the manual allows. ### Is an all-in-one washer-dryer harder to repair? The washing parts, such as the pump, the lock, the valves and the bearing, are much like those of any front-loader. The added drying parts share the same cabinet, so access is tighter, but the washing side is diagnosed the same way. ### Does a compact washer need a special outlet? Most run on an ordinary 120-volt grounded outlet. Units that heat their own water draw more current, so a dedicated circuit is the safe choice. The data plate on the machine states its needs. ### Why does my compact washer walk across the floor? It is light, so a heavy, uneven load moves it easily.
