The drive turns the drum for washing and spinning. Some washers use a belt from a motor to a pulley on the drum or transmission, others mount the motor right on the back of the tub or under the basket as a direct drive, and some older top-loaders join the motor to the transmission through a plastic coupling. A stretched belt slips and smells hot, a broken coupling leaves the motor spinning alone, and a failed washer motor or motor control leaves the drum still while the washer hums or shows a motor code. The repair tests the drive in order from the control to the drum, so the right part is replaced. A belt slipping on its pulley heats up and gives off that smell, often after an oversized or waterlogged load. Pause the washer and pull its plug. A burning plastic or electrical smell is more serious and points at the motor or wiring. ### I can hear the motor, yet the drum stays still. What broke? Something between the motor and the drum: a belt that slipped off or broke, a sheared motor coupling on some top-loaders, or a stripped drive hub. All are mechanical parts and usually modest repairs. ### Is a direct-drive motor more reliable than a belt? A direct drive has no belt to wear, which removes one common repair. When its motor, its rotor position sensor or its control does fail, though, the part is usually more expensive than a belt. ### Can overloading damage the motor? Yes, over time. A drum packed too tight with wet, heavy items makes the motor work harder, heats it and its control, and wears the belt and bearings.
