The washer drain pump is a small electric pump at the bottom of the cabinet that pushes wash and rinse water up through the drain hose to the standpipe or sink. On front-loaders a filter sits in front of it behind a hatch, and on most top-loaders the pump is reached from the back or underneath. When the pump cannot move water, the washer stops before the spin with water in the drum, often shows a drain code, and sometimes hums. The cause can be a sock or a coin in the pump, a worn impeller or motor, or a kinked or blocked hose. This repair covers all three, and the drain route is tested before any new part goes in. Yes, on most front-loaders it is meant to be cleaned by the owner. Lay down towels and a shallow pan, since the filter releases every drop of water left in the drum. Turn the cap slowly and clean it under a tap before refitting it firmly. ### The pump hums but no water moves. What does that mean? Power is reaching the pump, but the impeller is not turning or not moving water. Something may be jammed in the pump housing, or the impeller has broken off its shaft. Clearing the jam sometimes saves the pump; a broken impeller means a new one. ### Can a drain problem be in my house plumbing instead of the washer? Yes. A standpipe that is clogged, too narrow or too short can back water up or let it siphon out. If water comes up out of the standpipe while the washer drains, the house drain needs clearing, not the pump. ### Why does my washer drain slowly but still drain? A partly blocked filter, a kink in the hose where the washer was pushed back, or a weakening pump all slow the drain.
