A washer diagnostic visit starts by running a short cycle and watching each stage in order: the fill, the wash motion, the drain and the spin. Most washer complaints stop at one of those four stages, and knowing which one narrows the list of parts to a handful. The technician checks the water valves, the hoses, the drain route and the level of the machine before opening the cabinet, then reads any stored codes and tests the suspect parts with a meter. The result is one failed part named and priced, or a plain word that the washer is not worth fixing. Companies handle this differently, so settle it on the phone while you book. Finding out only when the invoice arrives leaves you no room to choose. ### Can you tell what is wrong with my washer from a description? A good description gets close. A washer that fills and washes but will not drain points at the pump or its filter, and one that hums without turning points at the drive. Confirming the exact part still takes a meter and a look inside the cabinet. ### How long does the washer diagnostic visit last? Usually under an hour. A stacked pair that has to be pulled out of a closet, or a washer full of water that has to be drained by hand first, takes longer. When the part is on the van, the repair can often be done on the same visit. ### Should I empty the washer before the technician comes? Take the clothes out if you can, but leave any water in the drum and do not clean the pump filter first.
