A modern washer is run by a main control board, often with a separate user interface board behind the buttons and, on direct-drive models, a motor control. The control listens to a water level pressure sensor, a temperature sensor, the door lock and the motor's speed signal, and it stops the cycle when any of them reports something it does not expect. That is why a failed washer control board and a failed sensor can look alike. A cracked pressure hose, a loose connector or a damp harness produces the same stop as a dead board. This repair tests the inputs before the board, reads the stored codes and checks the power supply, so a costly board is only fitted when it is truly the cause. Does that mean a bad board? Not necessarily. Check the outlet with another appliance and look for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet that has cut off. Only when power reaches the washer and the display stays dark does the board come under suspicion. ### Can I reset my washer's control? Most washers reset if unplugged for a few minutes, which clears a frozen display. It will not fix a failed part, and a code that returns after a reset is telling you something real. ### What does the water level sensor do? It measures air pressure in a small tube connected to the tub, which rises as water fills. A clogged or split tube, or a failed sensor, can make the washer overfill, underfill, or stop with a code. ### Can a leak damage the control board? Yes. Water running down inside the cabinet can reach the board or its connectors and corrode them.
