Water enters a washer through two hoses, one hot and one cold, and passes a small screen and an electric inlet valve on its way in. When the tub stays dry, the water is stopped at one of those points: a supply valve that is closed, a hose that is kinked, a screen clogged with sediment, or a valve that no longer opens. Front loaders and high-efficiency top loaders use far less water than older machines, so a low fill can be normal; a tub that stays bone dry, or a fill that takes much longer than usual, is not. The 5 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Are both supply valves behind the washer fully open? 02 Does no water come in at all, or only hot, or only cold? 03 Do you hear a hum or buzz at the back of the washer when it should fill? 04 Has the house had plumbing work, a water main repair or low pressure lately? 05 Does the washer show a fill or water supply code? ## Check these before you book. Washer not filling: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Open both supply valves behind the washer fully, and straighten any kink in the hoses. 02 Close the valves, disconnect a hose into a bucket, and open the valve briefly to check that the house supplies water. 03 Look into the valve inlet for a screen clogged with sand or rust. ### Also worth checking - Check whether only hot or only cold is missing by choosing a hot and then a cold cycle. - Write down any code shown, since many washers report a slow fill. ### How soon does it need a visit? Not urgent. The washer is safe to leave off. Is it filling enough? High-efficiency washers are designed to use a small amount of water, often less than you can see through the door. If clothes come out clean and rinsed, the fill is probably fine. ### Only cold water comes in. Why would that happen? Either the hot supply valve is closed, the hot hose or screen is clogged, or the hot side of the inlet valve has failed. Checking the hot valve behind the washer first is quickest. ### Could low house water pressure be the problem? Yes. The inlet valve needs some pressure to open fully. If other faucets in the house are weak too, the washer is not the cause. ### Can I clean the inlet screens myself? If you can shut the water off and disconnect the hoses safely, you can often rinse the screens.
