Front loaders, and many newer top loaders, lock the door or lid while the drum is moving or holding water, and release it only when the tub has drained and the drum has stopped. When the door stays locked, the washer either thinks it is still unsafe to open, because water remains or the drum is turning, or the lock itself has failed. A tub full of water is the most common reason; a lock that has burned out or a latch that has broken is the next. The lock is a safety device, and forcing the door can break the latch and the lock together.
