When clothes come out dirty, the washer is often working but the wash is not reaching them: too much laundry, too little water, the wrong detergent or a cycle too short for the soil. Cold water limits how well detergent dissolves, and residue on dark clothes usually means undissolved soap rather than dirt. When the habits are right and the result is still poor, a washer that does not fill fully, does not agitate or tumble properly, or does not drain between the wash and the rinse is the mechanical case. Usually undissolved detergent or softener, especially with cold water, too much detergent or powder in a short cycle. Using less detergent, or liquid on cold washes, usually clears it. ### Does an HE washer really need HE detergent? Yes. High-efficiency washers use little water, and regular detergent makes too many suds for that amount. Too many suds cushion the clothes and hold soil. ### My clothes come out with lint and hair on them. Is the washer failing? More often it is a clogged pump filter, a mixed load with towels, or residue in the drum. Clearing the filter and running a cleaning cycle helps. ### When is dirty laundry a washer repair and not a habit?
